Fascinated by the subject of identity and its enigmatic aspects, Gaud reinvents the live model's particularism by reproducing the attitudes and expressions the way she receives and feels them. No matter what media Gaud chooses (clay, plaster, mix media), she gives sense and life to her sculptures by reinterpreting slightly or overly what the live model offers. She would exacerbate a composure, the fold of a lip, adjust an arm or a leg or highlight a gaze. And when the eyes send deep desolate gleams or when they express astonishment and amazement, or, furthermore, when they are closed, it could be the reflection of the silent torment of doubt that we grasp from the artist’s soul. Gaud favours a rough and spontaneous finish which adds vibration to her work, gives strength to her figures, and naturally leaves a clear imprint of life.
Gaud also closely works with art foundries to make pieces which engage the quality of bronze as a noble material in its own right. She is intrigued by the bronze surface and the alchemy of patination because of the challenging possibilities and the unpredictability of the outcome. More than a surface coating, the coloring is fundamental. On some of her bronze sculptures, she adds gold leaves to highlight the volume and capture light.
She likes that bronze is eternal. And in its natural state, the tone and depth of colour is sublimely beautiful, yet the surface is endlessly receptive to the transformative effects of oxidization. This makes each bronze sculpture very unique and so become editions.
